Myth Busters

Church School Myth Busters!

Myth 1: "You have to attend church to come to a Church of England school."

False!

Children and families from all faiths and none are welcome in our school. While we have strong Christian values, there is no expectation that families attend church services in order to secure a place or to be part of our school community.

Myth 2: "You have to be christened or baptised to attend."

False!

Many of our pupils have not been baptised or christened. Children do not need to be baptised to attend our school and we welcome families from a wide range of backgrounds.

Myth 3: "Collective Worship is the same as going to church."

Collective Worship is a time when we come together as a school community to reflect, celebrate achievements, think about our values and consider how we can make a positive difference in the world.

We often explore Christian values such as:

  • Love
  • Kindness
  • Friendship
  • Thankfulness
  • Respect
  • Courage
  • Forgiveness

The focus is on how we can demonstrate these values in our everyday lives, both in and out of school.

Myth 4: "Church schools only teach Christianity."

False!

While Christianity underpins our school's values and ethos, pupils also learn about a range of world faiths and beliefs. We encourage children to develop understanding, respect and curiosity about the diverse world around them.

Myth 5: "Children are expected to become Christians."

False!

Our role is to educate, not to tell children what they must believe. We encourage children to ask questions, explore ideas and develop their own understanding in a safe and respectful environment.

Myth 6: "Church schools are only for religious families."

False!

Church schools serve their whole community. We are proud to welcome families from different faiths, cultures and backgrounds, as well as families who do not follow a faith.
