Our Topics

Our children follow the Lancashire topic overviews. In Year 5 these are as follows:

  • Autumn 1 – A Kingdom United
  • Autumn 2 – Food, Glorious Food!
  • Spring 1 – Amazon Adventure
  • Spring 2– Faster Higher Stronger
  • Summer 1 – Earthlings
  • Summer 2 – Inventors and Inventions

Homework will be given out on a Wednesday. In Year 5, this will include a Mathematical activity that focuses on the revision of learnt skills, a writing, reading comprehension or SPAG activity, and spellings.  Further to this, the children have access to various websites including TTRockstars, Prodigy Maths and Read Theory.

Reading Books

In Year 5, children are encouraged to read appropriate novels and non-fiction books regularly, some of these may be banded scheme books and others may be free reading. They are given time 15 minutes each day to read at school and we aim for them to match this at home. They should record this in their school diary and aim to have this signed by a parent once a week.

Worship and Reflection Areas

We have a dedicated worship and reflection area in class. Here the children are encouraged to spend time reflecting upon the teachings of Jesus Christ and consider how they fulfil each of our Christian values both at school and at home. In Year 5, the children also begin to plan and lead worship and in this area, have access to the resources they need to do so.

Before and After School

At the beginning of the school day, before registration (8:45am – 8:55am depending on arrival time) the children will have different maths, reading and SPAG activities to complete. These are focused on revision and practising the skills they have learnt previously.

School finishes at 3:30pm. In Year 5, children can either be collected from the classroom door or, with written permission, walk home.

General Reminders

  • Our PE days are Monday and Wednesday. Please ensure the children have the appropriate kit for each day. During the summer term, Year 5 will also be swimming on a Tuesday.
  • The children will also need their own water bottle in school, which they have access to all day. Please make sure that they are clearly labelled.
