Year 6

Welcome to Year 6 – Coundon Primary School

Welcome to Team Year  Six. I am Mrs Barras, the class teacher and I am expertly supported by Mrs Croughan  our fabulous teaching assistant.

Year Six is such an incredibly special year, as we reach the dizzy heights of the top at the school and prepare our young people for the transition to Secondary Education.  We strive to ensure that the children feel confident to tackle their end of Year assessments whilst providing a curriculum which stimulates enthusiasm and a love for learning.

Year Six is a year where everyone has an opportunity to shine.

  • Autumn 1 – Survival!
  • Autumn 2 – Britten’s Got Talent
  • Spring 1 – Heroes and Villains
  • Spring 2 – Super Sleuth
  • Summer 1 – Beside The Seaside
  • Summer 2 – Oh I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside

SATs

The 2023 KS2 SATs will take place in the week commencing Tuesday 9th May 2023. The tests will take place over four days and more information will be available nearer the time.

Homework

Homework will be given out on a Tuesday. In Year 6 this will include a Mathematical activity that focuses on their revision of learnt skills, a writing, reading comprehension or SPAG activity, and spellings. Additionally, each term the children will be given a topic project to be completed by the end of the term.  Further to this, the children have access to various websites including TTRockstars, Prodigy Maths and Read Theory.

Reading Books

In Year 6, children are encouraged to read appropriate novels and non-fiction books regularly. They are given time 15 minutes each day to read at school and we aim for them to match this at home. They should record this in their school diary and aim to have this signed by a parent once a week.

Worship and Reflection Areas

We have a dedicated worship and reflection area in class. Here the children are encouraged to spend time reflecting upon the teachings of Jesus Christ and consider how they fulfil each of our Christian values both at school and at home. In Year 6, the children also plan and lead worship and in this area, have access to the resources they need to do so.

Before and After School

At the beginning of the school day, before registration (8:45am – 8:55am depending on arrival time) the children will have different maths, reading and SPAG activities to complete. These are focused on revision and practising the skills they have learnt previously.

School finishes at 3:30pm. In Year 6, children can either be collected from the classroom door or, with written permission, walk home.

General Reminders

  • Our PE days are Monday and Friday. Please ensure the children have the appropriate kit for each day.
  • The children will also need their own water bottle in school, which they have access to all day, please make sure that they are clearly labelled.
